Musical Test Kitchen
Mark your calendars! Summer 2015 Musical Test Kitchen
Saturday, August 22, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
As an a cappella singing community, we are always excited about exploring and creating music we can sing together without accompaniment. Sheet music is one great tool to help us sing--and it is a tool we use for many songs we sing at St. Gregory's--but we can also learn to sing some beautiful, musically complex songs without sheet music. We try to include at least one paperless song each week in our Sunday Morning Eucharist. Most of the music for our monthly Supper Service is paperless. Including paperless songs in our musical repertoire helps us welcome the full musical participation of folks who may not feel comfortable reading music (because they are visually impaired, too young to read, or simply don't know how.) Singing paperless songs can help us all practice different ways of paying attention and listening when we sing together. Paperless songs are also extremely portable. You don't need a book. You don't need a photocopier. You just need your voice, and you can make music wherever you go! You can learn more about the theory and practice of leading paperless music at a Music that Makes Community workshop.
Inspired by the work of Music that Makes Community, we decided to create the Musical Test Kitchen. Several times each year singers and composers off all levels of experience and ability (including both trained and untrained musicians) gather to practice composing, teaching, leading, and learning paperless liturgical music in a low pressure, experimental environment. Join us in the Musical Test Kitchen as we taste test new songs and are nourished by the practice of creating and singing in community! Contact Kerri, Interim Family Minister at St. Gregory's.

At our first Musical Test Kitchen, Kerri Meyer adapted a traditional Bulgarian folk song & dance to create a Bulgarian Easter Troparion for the gathered "taste-testers". Enjoy the video, below.
