Liturgy 101
Liturgy is the way the people of God express their relationship to God and to each other.
Everything we do in church––the way our building looks, where people sit, how we say our prayers, who sings, who breaks the bread, how we talk to strangers, how we talk to each other, who does which tasks—every single choice we make in our liturgy says something about our values, our theological principles, and what we believe about who God is and who we are. And how we worship together can shape everything we do outside of church. Our liturgy informs our whole lives.
St. Gregory’s is known for its liturgy, and we offer many opportunities to reflect on our practices together. Members, liturgical leaders and visitors bring their questions and observations to Fifteen Good Minutes after the 10:45 service, and to the debriefing that follows the Supper Service. Liturgy 101 is a way to deepen and broaden those conversations. As well as looking at what we do in worship ––for example unaccompanied singing, dancing, sermon sharing–– this class examines the why of the practices so that we can continue to innovate with integrity. In order for St. Gregory’s to adapt, change and create new liturgies, we can’t just rely on habit (“we always did it this way”) or on personal likes and dislikes (“I love that song/I can’t stand that dance.”) Instead, we have to be guided by shared principles.
Liturgy 101 is an ongoing opportunity to reflect on the theology and principles of liturgy that guide us at St. Gregory’s, so that the whole community can develop a common understanding and participate more fully in all aspects of worship.
This class meets on the third Sunday of each month at 12:30PM: all ages are welcome. For more information, contact Sara Miles.
