Beginning in January, join us for a 6 week discussion of
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.
In The New Jim Crow, author and legal scholar Michelle Alexander argues that "we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." By targeting black men through the War on Drugs and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control—relegating millions to a permanent second-class status—even as it formally adheres to the principle of colorblindness.
Every year, the season of Epiphany (the season after Christmas) offers an opportunity for us to see things--Jesus, and ourselves, and one another-- in a new light. Epiphany also offers an opportunity for us to reflect on the implications of Baptism, including our ongoing commitment to "seek and serve Christ in all persons" and to "strive for justice and peace and protect the dignity of every human person." (From the Book of Common Prayer.) Join us as we prayerfully read and discuss The New Jim Crow, seeking to discover what new light it might shed on our our identities, our lives, and our call to action in the world as people of faith.
